Tips for the Traveling Nurse

Whether you plan on being on the road for most of the year or only taking jobs from time to time you will probably be on the road a lot more than you think with a job as a travelling nurse. Here are a couple tips to keep you going and make it go much smoother.
  • Travel light. Really only bring what you need. Bring only your necessities for the job (i.e. nursing scrubs, medical instruments, patient data, computer) and what you need to survive. This is not a vacation and you should not treat it as such. You don’t need that little black dress or your expensive suit and you will just find yourself disappointed when you never use them, they get damaged or you just get tired of lugging them around.
  • Load up on media. Fill your computer up with movie you love or have always meant to see. You are going to be travelling a lot and you’ll find yourself needing entertainment. Books are a great option for this and, if you have the money, getting an e-reader is a way to take a veritable library with you.
  • Pack extra medical scrubs. You will almost always need more sets than you will think. If you don’t need that many it’s still better to have more sets of lab coats than you’ll need than having too few. If you’ve spent any time as a nurse then you already know that nursing scrubs get messed up and ruined all too often. It’s better to just be able to throw that ruined set away than to travel with a set of nursing scrubs in your bag that you couldn’t quite get the smell of vomit out of. You’ll be happier with extra sets. I promise. They are light and pack well anyway.
